Faces of Reading Recovery
Hi, I'm Kellie Ehlers and I am a Reading Recovery and Reading Intervention teacher at Evening Street Elementary School in the Worthington City School District. Previous to attaining Reading Recovery training, I had reading validation certification, and taught third grade reaching an average of 25 students a year. Now that I teach Reading Recovery, I can reach so many more!
Currently, I am responsible for 505 students in my elementary school. I over-see all reading progress. My main responsibilities include teaching Reading Recovery, reading improvement small groups, test preparation groups, serving on our Intervention Assistance Core Team, organizing, implementing, training staff and volunteers, and writing lesson plans for Project MORE.
I teach an average of 8 to 9 first grade Reading Recovery students. My guided reading small groups consist of 10 to 15 first graders, 8 to 10 second graders, and flexible groupings for test preparation reaching as many as 15 to 25 students in grades three and four. I am available to teach test preparation groups in any grade with the highest need determined by my principal and me. In addition to these groups, I am used as a consultant and reading coach for the teachers in my building in kindergarten through sixth grade. Upon request, I go into classrooms to assist teachers by modeling guided reading groups for a week at a time reaching 25 children.
Reading Recovery enables me to reach many more students than a typical reading teacher would be able to reach because of Reading Recovery's advanced researched-based approach and continual on-going research. Reading Recovery has done all of this for me so I can reach so many. Because my district invested in Reading Recovery, we can continually "pay it forward". Now that is what I call cost savings!
Hi, I'm Jodie Washek and I am a primary literacy coordinator and Reading Recovery teacher. Before being trained in Reading Recovery, I worked with 25 students in small groups along with being a literacy coach. With the dual role I have now, I work with students and teachers in grades K-2 in many different aspects of the Literacy Collaborative framework. In Reading Recovery, which involves about half of my school day, I work with 8-10 students annually.
